Trustee Training

Working or volunteering for a charity offers unique opportunities and rewards, but there can also be challenges. In particular the responsibility for good governance and compliance, which can feel overwhelming. Public Leaders Appointments is committed to ensuring that Chairs and Trustees – both new and experienced – are equipped with the tools, knowledge and confidence needed to make an effective contribution to their Board.

We run online and in person Trustee Development courses for those who are new to being a Trustee or for more experienced board members who are seeking a refresh and update. You will leave the course equipped with the tools, knowledge and confidence needed to make an effective contribution to your Board.

Courses can be tailored for your own Board, please get in touch if you would be interested in hearing more about these sessions.

UPCOMING TRUSTEE TRAINING

Tuesday 28th April 2026 10am – 4pm
PKF Francis Clark, Royal William Yard, Plymouth

The Role of the Trustee – An Introduction to Charity Governance Understanding and Strengthening Board Effectiveness

Working for a charity offers unique opportunities and rewards, but trusteeship also carries significant responsibility. Trustees are ultimately accountable for a charity’s purpose, direction, resources and impact, and many people step into the role without formal training or a clear understanding of what good governance looks like in practice.

This in-person Trustee Development Course provides a clear, practical and accessible introduction to charity governance, designed to build confidence, knowledge and effectiveness at Board level.

The course will be delivered by Pete Hawkins, an experienced and highly regarded charity consultant, and is kindly sponsored and hosted by PKF Francis Clark at their Plymouth office.

For any enquiries about this course contact Anna Jay.

To book your spot please contact Melissa.

Voices from previous Trustee Training participants

“I can’t recommend this seminar highly enough, both for new Trustees and for those who have been in post a while. Public Leaders Appointments makes a dry subject engaging; the session is really practical and full of thought-provoking examples. Thoroughly recommend!”

Trustee, Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust

“I wish this session was compulsory for all trustees and staff who work with the board – it’s invaluable. Public Leaders Appointments delivers what can often be dry content in an engaging, accessible way and most importantly, make it relevant. It was also great to connect with other trustees and explore some current challenges in a supportive, confidential environment.”

OXFORD UNIVERSITY – MAKING A DIFFERENCE PROGRAMME

Winter 2026

Public Leaders Appointments MD Anna Jay will once again facilitate one of the modules at the Making a Difference Programme in February 2026.

This inspiring initiative is designed to give Oxford undergraduate and graduate students insight into purposeful career paths in the charity and social enterprise sectors.

The programme offers students access to a wide range of senior professionals working in or alongside the sector, and encourages them to consider how they might contribute – whether through their careers, as volunteers, or as future Trustees.

Anna is really looking forward to taking part and helping to generate and encourage interest from our future leaders!

Applications for this round are now closed but keep an eye open for the next Making a Difference Programme.

Voices from previous Trustee Training participants

“I found the Trustee training sessions to be a fantastic opportunity for expanding my knowledge and enhancing my skills. The course provided a comprehensive overview of both the legal and governance responsibilities associated with being a Trustee, as well as valuable insights of working effectively with Board members and staff. I now feel more confident in my role and equipped with practical tools and knowledge to make a meaningful contribution to the Board.“

Ellie Trebilcock

Young Trustee, Cornwall VSF

“The sessions provided a sound baseline introduction for Trustees / Chairs. For me, a key recurring theme throughout the session was the relationship between the Trustees / Chairs and the Executive Team.“
