Harbour Commissioner / Non Executive Director – Falmouth Harbour

For 150 years Falmouth Harbour Commissioners have protected Falmouth Harbour during storms, safely managed marine accidents and pollution risks and have provided a gateway to Cornwall and our town for people from all over the world.

We are currently seeking two new Commissioners to join our small and dynamic Board who are entrusted with the Harbour future and have strategic oversight of a wide range of activities which are vital to the safe management and economic prosperity of the Falmouth Harbour.

This is an amazing opportunity to contribute not just to Falmouth Harbour, but to the economic and environmental sustainability of Falmouth and Cornwall.

The role

Our Board and Committee structure is at the centre of our strong governance. Being a Falmouth Harbour Commissioner is a demanding role, which requires dedication and commitment. The Board operates transparently and accountably and is regularly subjected to scrutiny by its stakeholders and the media. The role of the organisation is wide and includes exercising statutory powers and meeting statutory duties. In addition, FH operates two service arms providing marine leisure facilities and pilotage services.

What we need from you

The Board is selected to provide a broad mix of skills appropriate to the roles that we undertake. There are a number of areas of expertise that will be beneficial for the overall Board effectiveness and in this round of recruitment we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with board level experience (director or senior management) who can meet at least one of the following:

  • Maritime/Marine – Currently employed in maritime leisure industry with commercial and development experience. Marine safety management experience would be desirable.
  • People – Individual familiar with dealing with people or team management and change management (rather than HR). Occupational Health and Safety experience would be desirable.
  • Public & Community – Individual with experience of public engagement and stakeholders and wider community. Possibly from public sector background.

The successful applicants will have good interpersonal skills, independence of thought and an ability to challenge constructively while making balanced and informed decisions. You must be able to demonstrate a high degree of personal integrity.

We are committed to increasing the diversity of our Board, and therefore welcome applications from anyone regardless of ethnicity, heritage, gender, disability, sexuality, religion, socio-economic background or other differences.
